From medicinal plants to molecular models

We study how natural products and modern formulations can become safer, more effective medicines, combining wet-lab pharmacology, animal models and computational methods.

what we study

Research

Our questions start with the medicines people in Bangladesh actually use, from traditional plant remedies to generic tablets on pharmacy shelves. We test what works, measure what harms and design better ways to deliver drugs.

  • Phytopharmacology and herbal drug validation

Testing Bangladeshi medicinal plants for the activities traditional medicine attributes to them, and identifying the compounds responsible.

    • Hepatoprotective and antioxidant activity of plant extracts in rat models
    • GC-MS and FTIR guided phytochemical profiling
    • Ethnomedicinal surveys of folk and tribal medicinal practitioners
  • Toxicology and safety assessment

Measuring how pesticides, heavy metals and contaminants damage the body, and whether plant compounds can protect against that damage.

  • Cancer therapeutics

Exploring sonodynamic and photodynamic therapy and plant-derived anticancer agents.

  • Clinical and public health research

Working with physician researchers on diabetes care, pain medicine, maternal health and medicine use in Bangladesh.

where we work

Jahangirnagar University

Jahangirnagar University was established on 20 August 1970 and formally opened on 12 January 1971. It is a fully residential public university set on a 697-acre green campus in Savar, about 30 km from central Dhaka, with 36 departments across six faculties and more than 15,000 students.

The Department of Pharmacy belongs to the Faculty of Biological Sciences. It trains pharmacists through a five-year professional B.Pharm programme and offers the M.Pharm, a weekend MS in Pharmaceutical Sciences, and MPhil and PhD research degrees. Its graduates work across Bangladesh's pharmaceutical industry, hospitals, regulatory bodies and universities, at home and abroad.
